Action Grant Awardees
Animating Global Health Messages
Graduate animation students from the School of Cinematic Arts were
awarded funds to develop animated global health messages. Their aim was
to illustrate the Institute’s core themes: Chronic Disease;
Environmental Health; Globalization, Business, and Health; Health
Communication, Entertainment and the Arts; and Capacity Building and
Training. They successfully captured these concepts through animated
messages and convey the relevance of a trans-disciplinary approach in
global health.

Global Health Review: Clinton Global University
The Global Health Review (GHR), a student run organization, applied for the Clinton Global Initiative University and was invited to attend the conference in Austin, Texas. The USC Global Health Action Grant funded travel for four USC MPH students to participate in the 2nd Annual Clinton Global Initiative University Conference. The students were able to connect with hundreds of students from around the world to commit to action for change and attended workshops to examine issues surrounding climate change, education, and global health. They also had the opportunity to meet President Bill Clinton and other world-renowned global health leaders.
Global Health Awareness Week
The Institute of Global Health provided support and co-hosted many events with a number of different student organizations during the first annual USC Global Health Awareness Week in April 2009. The week consisted of events and activities with the theme, “Forming Partnerships; Breaking Barriers”. Students and faculty networked during the week’s events and spread awareness on global health topics. The events featured many leaders in global health from USC and the Los Angeles area who shared their global health experiences and knowledge with the USC community. The 2010 Global Health Week will focus on “Sustainable Development and Health” and will be held the week of April 5th. Students are encouraged to submit funding proposals for Global Health Week events early on. We look forward to another successful week of events highlighting global health issues around both the UPC and HSC campuses.
Smokefree USC
A group of dedicated MPH students have begun a campaign to make USC a tobacco-free campus. The Institute for Global Health provided funds to the students to help them make USC a healthier environment in which to live, learn, and work. Undergraduate and Graduate students alike are encouraged to join the campaign and promote the clean air campaign.
