A Healthier You - A Healthier Uganda: Promoting physical activity among Ugandan Parliamentarians

It might seem surprising but Uganda is facing a growing burden of overweight and obesity. This trend is already resulting in a higher prevalence of chronic, non-communicable diseases like diabetes. In addition to efforts at improving individual behavior, effective public policy is critical to preventing chronic disease. That’s why the USC Institute for Global Health is partnering with the Ugandan Parliament to promote physical activity. The first step of this initiative was to establish a small fitness gym for the members and staff of the Ugandan Parliament. On a personal level, MPs may become healthier and fitter, but the project may have a much broader impact. The MPs’ increasing awareness may also motivate them to re-evaluate old policies and develop new laws to protect the public from the threat of chronic disease and to improve access to treatment.

Fitness is Fun: Promoting Exercise Among Ugandan Adolescent Girls

Ugandan adolescent girls face obstacles in choosing to become more physically active. Most attend boarding schools where space, equipment and training are limited. Also, the girls face cultural challenges such as perceptions of ideal body type. These obstacles may explain the doubling in the proportion of adult females who are overweight or obese in the past 15 years. The USC Institute for Global Health seeks to make a positive impact on this issue by working closely with the girls themselves to develop an innovative intervention to promote physical activity. This project is not just about increasing physical activity; it also aims to inspire girls to feel empowered, safe and comfortable while they exercise.

A Nossa Casa - Mozambique

In a country devastated by HIV/AIDS, A Nossa Casa seeks to mend lives and build families for children orphaned by the epidemic. The USC Institute for Global Health is partnering with the African Millennium Foundation to realize the dream of A Nossa Casa as a thriving community of children and adults who attain happy, health and productive lives. In the past year, cross-continent preparations have been developing at a rapid pace and African Millennium Foundation aims to break ground on the A Nossa Casa health clinic in the summer of 2012.

Gates Global Health Response Engine

The USC Institute for Global Health, in partnership with the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the USC Games Institute, and the Institute for Multimedia Literacy, is receiving support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to create a global health response engine that aims to innovate the way global health leaders and students learn to solve emerging global health problems. Today’s global health leaders investigate complex problems, collaborate within diverse teams, and advocate for and make decisions based on varying degrees of data available. Teaching these skills to the next generation of global health leaders in a traditional classroom environment is difficult. Instructors and students require more than facts or limited case studies, they need interactive problem-based scenarios that develop the skills and insight that will be required to address complex future global health challenges. This scenario-based engine will facilitate student interaction with the simulated world to provide an innovative skill building and training platform.
