Jeffrey O’Malley is the Senior Advisor, LGBTI Inclusion, Africa for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Based in South Africa, he works in countries across Africa supporting efforts to promote social inclusion and human rights for sexual and gender minorities, contributing to public health and social protection.
O’Malley has worked at the intersection of public health, human rights and sustainable development for over 30 years. In the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, he was at the forefront of organizing support to community action on the epidemic in developing countries, working with the World Health Organization’s Global Programme on AIDS, at the Harvard School of Public Health, and as the Founder and Executive Director of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. From the mid-1990s, O’Malley worked more broadly on public health and development issues, serving as the India Country Director for PATH (the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health), as the Director of HIV, Health and Development for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and as the Director of Data, Research and Policy for UNICEF. His academic publications have focused on HIV, sexual and reproductive health and rights, child rights, and the role of civil society in development.
