With growing interest in the teaching of health and human rights and because of the number of ad-hoc requests received for good examples of course syllabi, the Program on Global Health & Human Rights, Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California created this database of syllabi to provide a central repository for new and experienced faculty to view the diversity of approaches, content, methods and materials used to teach health and human rights courses.

Background & Aims

This resource aims to facilitate information exchange and strengthen communication within and across individuals and institutions teaching health and human rights, as well as others interested in teaching health and human rights concepts and methods. In providing these syllabi, we hope to stimulate and support efforts to integrate health and human rights into a wide variety of specific and general curricula.

The database is continually being expanded. If you wish your syllabus to be updated or considered for inclusion in the database please email

Database Organization

The database is organized into two thematic areas:

  • General health and human rights
  • Sexual and reproductive health and human rights

Within each thematic area courses are alphabetized based on the last name of the instructor listed on the course syllabus. Active web links are provided to facilitate access to the PDF of the referenced syllabus.

The database includes a range of courses, bridging the fields of health and human rights in very different ways. Some of the courses included here focus on general concepts and methods linking health and human rights issues, others are human rights courses that include health components, and others have a specific topical focus that include a health and human rights orientation.

Within the university setting, courses taught at schools of public health, law, social work, nursing and medicine are represented.
