Los Angeles is emerging as a global health capital in the U.S. given its position as a major port on the Pacific Rim, gateway to Central and South America, and home to some of the largest and most diverse immigrant diasporas in the world.

Former USC President Steven B. Sample founded APRU in 1997 in order to capitalize on the emerging power and prominence of the Pacific Rim. It now comprises 42 premier Pacific Rim research universities located in 15 countries and fosters international collaboration among faculty, students and university leaders.

Global Health Program

The USC Institute for Global Health collaborates with APRU to coordinate the Global Health Program Workshop at their yearly meetings. Mellissa Withers manages the APRU Global Health Program, which seeks to foster excellence in global health research, education and university impact across APRU.
