2014-2015

Sarah MacCarthy, DSc

Sarah MacCarthy, a postdoctoral fellow at Brown University, was the first official Global Health & Human Rights Fellow. She completed her doctorate at the Harvard School of Public Health in the Department of Global Health and Population with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and human rights in 2012. For her dissertation research in Salvador, Brazil, she studied why, given the availability of free and universal HIV/AIDS services, individuals delay in accessing testing and subsequent care. During 13 months of fieldwork Dr. MacCarthy collaborated with a team of researchers led by Dr. Dourado at Instituo de Saúde Coletiva based at Universidade Federal da Bahia. While collecting data for her dissertation, she worked with individuals at ISC and key activists in the local transgender community to submit an application to study transgender health in Salvador. The Ministry of Health recently funded the application and Dr. MacCarthy continued to be a part of this project during her GHHR fellowship.
