An estimated 16 percent of pregnant women and 20 percent of postpartum women in low- and middle-income countries experience depression. In a qualitative study published in the journal Midwifery, researchers sought to explain the perspectives and experiences of Mongolian health care providers regarding postpartum depression.
They found almost all providers agreed that patient-provider discussion is critical for identifying postpartum depression, but that such discussions are rare because providers lacked confidence and training in recognizing and treating women with postpartum depression, and faced other related barriers, including time constraints.
